Presidents & Secretaries Conference

The president and secretary play crucial roles in the American Legion Auxiliary. We depend on these women to keep members at the local level connected to and informed about happenings at National Headquarters. Officers representing each state (or "department" in Auxiliary terms) meet together every fall for professional development, to share best practices, and to learn about mission priorities. Separate training tracks are presented that address topics pertinent to each office. Sessions for presidents typically focus on leadership, media training, and tips for keeping departments connected to units, while secretaries receive the latest information on Auxiliary procedures, forms, and technology.

In the Auxiliary, each state or “department” has two primary officers, the president and secretary. The president is elected annually, and her role is to represent the Auxiliary's national president statewide, appoint and supervise various chairmen and committee members, and preside at the department convention.

The office of secretary is usually a paid position, and the same individual may serve for an indefinite number of years. Her role is that of administration, and she manages the business of the Auxiliary at the state level. In some departments the secretary/treasurer is one position.
