National CommitteeAuxiliary Emergency Fund

When a sudden financial crisis befalls an eligible Auxiliary member, the Auxiliary Emergency Fund may be able to provide temporary emergency assistance when no other source of help is available. The AEF, on occasion, could be a helping hand for a struggling member in need of food, shelter, or utilities for her family when a natural disaster or other calamity strikes.

Established in 1969 by the National Executive Committee and funded initially through a generous legacy gift from Auxiliary member Helen Colby Small of Burlington, Wis., the AEF is now able to continue to grant assistance through voluntary contributions.

The Impact of the Fund

A cancer diagnosis is always difficult to handle, but imagine the added weight when the victim is a young woman with a small child. That is exactly what happened to Jeannie, a member of Unit 8 in Lexington, N.C. After losing her job due to the disease, she drew down her unemployment until that, too, was exhausted. Facing a desperate situation, Jeannie’s unit applied to the AEF on her behalf. The funds she received covered her house payment for three months and, more importantly, allowed her to live out her last days in her own home. Jeannie passed away on June 9, 2010, but the gift she received through the AEF eased the burden of care she felt for her daughter.

“You will never know how much this check helped this young lady,” said Marie Bolin, the unit president. “She was so upbeat when she called to say she had received it. So from the very bottom of our Carolina hearts we say ‘thank you!’”

A hero is a person who doesn’t count the cost of sacrifice in time, money, and convenience to bring joy, laughter, and hope to the infants and children who are hungry, to women who are overpowered, or to families that are ignored.
