Auxiliary Members Care for the Families of the Deployed
Family of deployed serviceman displays pillowcase made at Kids CanteenThe American Legion Family is always ready to help our deployed OIF/OEF servicemembers and their families. Last year alone, American Legion Auxiliary members in Florida raised nearly $10,000 for Operation: Military Kids and sent 90 children of deployed military to camp. In New Jersey, $11,000 worth of phone cards and 100 cell phones were donated to facilitate day-to-day communication between active duty military and their families. The women of Wisconsin invested and 2,400 hours and $28,000 to make camouflage quilts for soldiers. Children of those servicemembers also received 2,424 Operation Snuggles Kid Quilts.

In recent years, the Auxiliary's Junior members have invited families of deployed military to a carnival-type event called the Home Front Kids Canteen. This service project, held during their annual meeting at national convention, provides kids with the opportunity to fold pocket flags and make cards to send to loved ones overseas as well as play games and interact with other children whose parents are deployed. Photo pillow cases (as shown in this photo), made possible through the Operation: Military Kids mobile tech lab, are popular keepsakes for "America's littlest heroes." It’s a powerful way to involve Junior members in hands-on service to some really special children.
