American Legion Auxiliary honors singer-songwriter Michael Peterson and Col. Jill Chambers Ret. with Public Spirit Award

  • INDIANAPOLIS—2/27/12—The American Legion Auxiliary has recognized Col. Jill Chambers (Ret.) of This Able Vet LLC and Michael Peterson of Tag, You’re It! with its prestigious Public Spirit Award. The American Legion Auxiliary’s National President, Kris Nelson, presented the annual award at a luncheon in honor of the recipients today in Washington, D.C.

    “The work done by Col. Jill Chambers (Ret.) and Michael Peterson is perfectly aligned with the American Legion Auxiliary mission of serving veterans, active-duty military and their families,” Nelson said.

    Chambers, a survivor of the 9/11 Pentagon attack, founded This Able Vet LLC to ensure that all servicemembers, veterans and their families understand how to access all the resources available to them. More information is available at

    Chambers also collaborates on the Tag, You’re It! school assembly program and website, Directed by Michael Peterson, Tag, You’re It! uses multimedia, illusions, music, humor and audience participation to make discovering personal responsibility a dynamic experience. A singer-songwriter who has recorded 16 albums, Peterson also has performed for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and received the Spirit of Hope award for his service to members of the armed forces.

    The American Legion Auxiliary’s Public Spirit Award, established in 1983, recognizes outstanding individuals and organizations for contributions that improve their communities, especially efforts that benefit the military, veterans and their families. Previous recipients include Gen. Colin Powell (Ret.), Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, former President Ronald Reagan, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Jeane Kirkpatrick, advice columnist Ann Landers and Miss America 2000, Heather Renee French.

    Founded in 1919, the American Legion Auxiliary is the world’s largest patriotic women’s service organization, with a membership of nearly 800,000. Local American Legion Auxiliary units have a strong presence in more than 9,500 communities nationwide.
