HOUSTON—8/28/13—American Legion Auxiliary Department of Wisconsin received the National President's Award for Excellence by American Legion Auxiliary National President Peggy Thomas. Awards were presented in August at the American Legion Auxiliary's 93rd National Convention in Houston.The National President's Award for Excellence is presented annually to American Legion Auxiliary units and departments that represent the "best of the best" in planning and implementation of the American Legion Auxiliary's mission. Recipients are selected based on applications that address the department's achievements in Auxiliary national goals and objectives in at least three Auxiliary programs.The Department of Wisconsin successfully implemented multiple community-based programs over the past year. As part of the Children & Youth, Americanism, and Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation programs, they completed a variety of activities in support of veterans, servicemembers and their families. The Department of Wisconsin logged more than 156,000 volunteer hours to Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation; spent and donated more than $220,000 to VA&R programs; served nearly 32,000 veterans; donated more than $8,500 to Children & Youth emergency funds; donated nearly $6,500 to Homeless Veterans Assistance Centers; donated more than $87,000 to VA hospitals; and raised $256,335 in Poppy donations.American Legion Auxiliary members have dedicated themselves for nearly a century to meeting the needs of our nation's veterans, military and their families both here and abroad. They volunteer millions of hours yearly, with a value of nearly $2 billion.
