WASHINGTON, D.C.—7/25/14—A young woman of character and conviction rose to the top of American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation 2014 when she was elected president July 24.
A rising senior at West Albany High School, Sydney Roberts of Albany, Ore., was elected by her peers—97 other “senators” from 49 states who were carefully selected to attend ALA Girls Nation at the 4-H Youth Conference Center in Chevy Chase, Md.
Roberts is involved in speech and debate, YMCA youth and government, as well as Key Club. When not busy in her academics, she finds time to volunteer with the Albany Downtown Association and Fish of Albany. Roberts has made several achievements, including placing third in parliamentary debate at OSAA Speech and Debate Championship, receiving the William T. "Doc" McLean Master Measure Award, holding office in the National Honor Society as president. Roberts is interested in pursuing a career in biomedical engineering.
Roberts shared her thoughts on how being among outstanding peers at ALA Girls Nation compares to her past experiences: “We are all girls who are politically active and are living in a world where our voices sometimes are not directly…considered,” she said. Roberts says her mom inspires her, describing her as an amazing person who escaped poverty and has become a respected member of the medical community.
Roberts took her oath of office July 24 on Capitol Hill, administered by American Legion Auxiliary National President Nancy Brown-Park.
Each American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation delegate represents her home state as a senator. The senators caucus at the beginning of the session, organize into committees and conduct hearings on bills, allowing delegates to learn the proper legislative procedures according to the U.S. Senate.
American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation is a premier leadership conference designed to provide practical insight into the workings of government, to instill a sense of pride and loyalty in America, to empower young women to become leaders and to create friendships and memories that last a lifetime.###
