About six years ago, my husband and I went to an annual breakfast event for veterans at a local church. I saw a woman I recognized who, like me, was a transplant to our community. She was fairly new in our town, and I knew her husband was a Legionnaire. Sitting together during breakfast, we struck up a conversation. I quickly discovered that we had quite a few things in common. I mentioned I was looking for a church, and she invited my husband and me to visit her church. I told her, "I'll make a deal with you: You join the ALA, and I'll check out your church."
I have learned one of the biggest reasons potential members don't join the Auxiliary is simply because they are never asked. She joined the Auxiliary, and I went to her church and felt so welcomed. My goal was to increase membership, but I got so much more out of it besides a new member. I found a new church, a new family, and a really great friend.
Barbara is currently her unit's chaplain and previously served as unit historian.
